Nevada Solar One

Nevada Solar One is the largest solar concentrator built in the United States in the past 15 years. It is a 64 MW plant completely run on clean energy and is located just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. If this same plant were coal fueled, it woud spew 200 million pounds of carbon into the air every year. This is innovation at work! It went online in April 2007 and took just one year to build this 300 acre site.

Gilbert Cohen, Vice President of Engineering & Operations for Solargenix, said the project cost somewhere in the range of $220–250 million. He said the power is slightly more expensive than wind power but less than photovoltaic (PV) power, more commonly used in small rooftop projects on homes or businesses. Other sources close to the project put this price at somewhere between 9–13 cents per kWh. As more are built, however, and they're scaled up even larger, Cohen says a target of seven cents per kWh will not be difficult to reach in the near future.
